Children’s Dentistry

childenAt Inspired Dentistry we are pleased to provide a wide range of dental care for all members of the family. We welcome younger patients to our practice with the aim of making their visit educational yet informal and fun.

Figures from a 2013 Children’s Dental Health Survey show that tooth decay in the under 15’s has actually dropped in recent years. However, up to half of 8 year olds and a third of under 5’s still have signs of decay in their milk teeth!

The best way to ensure healthy teeth and gums in adulthood is to encourage a positive and regular relationship with the Dentist and to also educate your child regarding a healthy diet and good tooth cleaning habits. You really will be helping them to build strong, healthy teeth for life.

How to look after young teeth:

  • Register your child with a dentist from birth if possible.
  • As soon as the first (milk) teeth appear it’s important to get them checked and continue to attend regular appointments. The best way to do this is to bring your child with you to your own dental check-ups. This will help them to become familiar with the surgery and staff.
  • Once teeth have started to appear in the mouth it’s important to brush them twice a day so that it becomes routine.
  • Remember your child will need supervision when brushing- probably until they are around 8 or 9 years old. Even when they are old enough to brush themselves it’s a good idea to keep an eye on them. Apps can be useful to help make sure they brush everywhere and for long enough.
  • Limit sugary foods in your child’s diet. We all know that fizzy drinks are bad but do remember that fruit juice, squash and milkshake can also contain high quantities of sugar which can damage tooth enamel. Offer milk or water instead- and avoid too many sweets!

Don’t pass on your fear of the Dentist!

Easier said than done we know, but If you are scared of the Dentist it’s really important that you try not to pass this fear onto your child.

  • If you’d really rather not go with them to an appointment then find a friend or family member who will. If they see you panicked or upset they are likely to feel the same way.
  • We can book you an early morning appointment so that you don’t have to spend all day worrying about it. This is also useful for younger children who might be tired by the end of the day.
