Advice for dental emergencies
While we aim to see you as quickly as possible, taking the right steps immediately after a dental mishap can help manage pain and protect your smile. Follow these practical tips to handle common emergencies before you arrive at the clinic:
Knocked-out teeth – Time is critical if we are to successfully save a tooth. Handle the tooth only by the crown (the top part), avoiding the delicate roots. After a gentle rinse with water to remove debris, try to place the tooth back into the socket facing the right way. If it doesn’t slide in easily, do not force it. Instead, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a small container of milk or water with a tiny pinch of salt.
Chipped or broken teeth – Start by rinsing your mouth with warm water and saving any fragments you can find. To manage swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. If there is any bleeding, apply firm pressure to the area using a clean piece of gauze until it subsides.
Lost fillings or crowns – If your crown or filling has come out, keep it safe. In the meantime, you can protect the exposed tooth and keep the restoration in place using a small piece of sugar-free chewing gum or a temporary dental cement kit from a pharmacy.
Dental abscesses – If you notice a painful swelling or suspect an abscess, rinse frequently with warm salt water and use over-the-counter pain relief as directed. However, if you experience a high fever, extreme pain, or any difficulty breathing or swallowing, please seek immediate attention at A&E.
