Hygienist Services

hygienist, Hygienist ServicesWhy should I visit a Hygienist?

A trip to the hygienist could make a world of difference to the look, feel and general health of your mouth. Just as you would visit your Dentist twice a year, it is highly recommended that you visit a Hygienist between regular dental health checks to fully maintain health of your mouth.

The Hygienist will fully scale and polish your teeth, removing any tartar build up. They will pay careful attention to the health of your gums and teeth, flagging up any problem areas that need extra care.

They can offer advice on how to improve these parts of your mouth, showing you how to use specific interdental products such as floss and single tuft brushes.

The hygienists at Inspired Dentistry are also fully qualified to carry out specific tasks on behalf of our Dentists including x-rays and the placing of small fillings and fissures sealants. This service benefits our customers by helping to reduce waiting times for more standard procedures.

Gum Disease

One of the main focuses for our hygienists is to detect and deal with the signs of gum disease. Gum disease is a prevalent condition which has become the most common cause of tooth loss in adults in the UK.

Gum disease is caused by the daily build-up of plaque on the teeth. Unfortunately even when you brush your teeth well, a certain amount of plaque will stay on your teeth unseen. Overtime this layer of plaque hardens around the base of the teeth, on the gum line.

As it starts to irritate the gums you may notice a reddening, swelling and possible soreness. Many patients can notice bleeding when brushing their teeth whilst others will develop bad breath. Some patients experience no symptoms at all.

In up to 20% of patients a sporadic reaction can occur, causing your own immune system to overreact and start attacking the tartar build up. Unfortunately your body doesn’t just start breaking down the plaque, it actually starts destroying your existing gum and bone too! Left untreated this can cause your jawbone to shrink. Teeth may become loose and can be lost altogether.

There are a number of factors that can increase your risks of developing gum disease. These include smoking, stress, not cleaning your teeth regularly and certain medical condition such as diabetes.

It is important that both children and adults are checked periodically for gum disease.

Although it is not possible to completely cure gum disease if caught early enough it can usually be successfully managed before it gets out of control. That’s why regular visits to the Hygienist are so important.

So don’t delay your next visit. Ensure the health of your mouth in the long term.
