What are the benefits of dental implants?
17th March 2024A dental implant is a permanent replacement for missing teeth. This is a great replacement and closest you will find to a natural tooth/teeth.
It is a great alternative to a bridge as you do not need to damage any adjacent teeth.
What are dental Implants made from?
- Most dental implants are made of titanium but can also be zirconia. Titanium is the more commonly used material due to its biocompatibility, strength, and durability.
- The Dental Crown itself, is often made from porcelain fused to metal which creates a strong durable tooth.
Timing of Implant procedure?
A dental implant is carefully planned by our Implant dentist and the treatment co-ordinator using a CBCT scan. This helps to define weather you have enough bone structure, whether it is close to the sinus or the ID nerve. Once we have gathered all the information, we will write to you with a full treatment plan report. The actual clinical implant procedure can take between 1 – 2 hours.
Once the implant is placed, we would like to see you for a review around 2 weeks after, this is to check how things are. The next procedure will then be 10 weeks later. During this period, a temporary replacement tooth/teeth will be provided so you do not have a gap.
At the 10-week appointment we will scan ready for the permanent crown which will be fitted 3 weeks later.
How long will it last?
The actual dental implant can last anywhere between 10-25 years, or even a lifetime. (This is subject to many factors of which are individual to each case). The crown itself may wear overtime and these can be easily replaced without having to replace the implant.
We always advise a regular Hygiene programme as well as a good care regime at home.
