Implant-Retained Dentures

Implant-retained dentures in Southampton to regain your confidence to smile, eat, and live

If you suffer from loose, slipping, or uncomfortable dentures, you are not alone. Many people struggle with traditional removable dentures that can sometimes move when you are eating, or irritate the gums, or require messy adhesives.

At our Southampton dental practice, we offer a life-changing, modern alternative in the form of implant-retained dentures. They securely anchor to your teeth and jawbone, and this popular treatment allows you to smile, speak and enjoy your favourite foods with complete peace of mind.

Book a denture consultation with us today and discuss your missing teeth options.

What are implant-retained dentures?

Unlike traditional dentures that sit on the top of your gums and rely solely on natural suction or adhesive, implant-retained dentures are held firmly in place by dental implants. A dental implant is a small, bio-compatible titanium post placed into your jawbone. Once integrated, these tiny posts act just like natural tooth roots. Special connectors are attached to the top of the implants, which allows your custom-made denture to snap securely into position.

Depending on your individual needs, your implant dentures in Southampton can either be removable for easy cleaning (known as snap-on dentures) or permanently fixed in place.

The benefits of implant-retained dentures

Upgrading from conventional dentures to denture implants offers significant lifestyle and health benefits:

Enjoy your favourite foods: You can eat steaks, apples, crusty bread and nuts without fear of your teeth moving or painful spots.
No messy adhesives: Say goodbye to sticky gels, powders and fixatives for good.

Natural look and feel: Custom-crafted to match your facial features and providing a natural and often more defined profile.
Preserve jawbone: Sometimes missing teeth can cause the jawbone to shrink over time. This can give a sunken appearance to the face. Dental implants stimulate the bone, which can help maintain your facial structure.

Speak & laugh with confidence: Speak with confidence and laugh out loud without worrying about your dentures slipping.

What to expect from your treatment

We believe in transparent, stress-free care. Your treatment process typically follows four straightforward steps:

Initial consultation & digital assessment: We evaluate your oral health, take 3D digital scans, and design a bespoke treatment plan tailored to your budget and aesthetic goals.

Implant placement: In a gentle, minor surgical procedure performed under local anaesthetic (with dental sedation available for nervous patients), 2 to 4 implants are precisely placed into the jawbone.

Healing & integration: Over a period of a few months, your implants fuse with the jawbone (a process called osseointegration). You will wear a comfortable temporary denture during this time.

Fitting your final dentures: Once healed, your custom-made, natural-looking dentures are securely fitted onto the implants. You leave our clinic ready to display your new smile.

Inspired Dentistry took me, a very nervous customer, with a wanting to understand the why’s and how’s of the pain I was experiencing and treated me in a way that I have to say was second to none.

At the age of 54, I experienced my first major teeth / tooth problem. Identified by pain! Until this time I have been very lucky and not had teeth / tooth issues. Going to the dentist is certainly not my favourite thing to do, let alone to have any form of treatment. But when there is pain there is little choice but to seek professional treatment. Full confidence was given to me, and i was very well treated. The problem has been resolved, and a long term solution provided for my tooth. As an added bonus, I can confidently say that whilst I hope I don’t have any other teeth issues ever, if I do, I know I will be in good hands at this practice, with full confidence of a good outcome. Thank you Inspired Dentistry.

The level of information and confirmation of understanding is excellent. I have undergone extensive work with implants and bone improvement, all of which were successful with minimum discomfort. Very good communication from the admin staff. Very happy with the service.

I’ve had some fairly major things done over the last 2 years. I’ve been very nervous and due to being neurodivergent I have sensory issues. The team here is kind, thoughtful and thorough. Dr Ad is very kind, gentle and skilled. Rosie is amazing, she does everything. Natalie is kind also and very friendly. Natasha, the Office Manager also I really appreciate, professional and very friendly. I would 100% recommend this practice.

If you need to have an implant, this is the place to go. First class care before and after from Rosie in particular. Everything explained by Natalie at each stage and sedation meant I felt nothing during tooth extraction. For anyone nervous I really recommend going for sedation and thanks to Ad for the painless procedure and my shiny new tooth!

I had some quite involved dental surgery yesterday involving removal of two teeth, one of which was a wisdom tooth. At the same time, two implants were fitted. I can’t praise everyone at Inspired Dentistry highly enough. They are so caring and made me feel very much at ease! Pain free too. Brilliant job! Huge thanks to Nat, Rosie, Maria and of course, Adnan.

FAQS

The placement procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you won't feel pain during the treatment. Most patients experience minor soreness for a few days afterward, which is easily managed with over-the-counter painkillers.

If you have removable snap-on dentures, you simply unclip them at night to clean them with a soft brush and denture solution, while gently cleaning around the implant attachments in your mouth. If your denture is fixed, you clean it in place using specialised floss and an interdental brush.

For a lower denture, as few as two implants can provide stability. For an upper denture, four or more implants are typically recommended due to softer bone structure in the upper jaw.

The main difference comes down to how your new teeth are secured and whether they can be removed. Implant-retained dentures typically use two to four implants to create a stable anchor point, but usually the denture itself can still be snapped on and off by you for easy daily cleaning. All-on-4 (often called ‘same-day teeth’) uses four to six strategically angled implants to hold a full arch of teeth permanently in place. With All-on-4, your new smile is fixed permanently, meaning it functions and feels just like natural teeth and can only be removed by your dentist.

With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, the titanium implants placed into your jawbone can last a lifetime. The custom acrylic or porcelain denture sitting on top receives daily wear and tear from chewing, so it typically needs to be replaced every 7 to 15 years, along with periodic replacements of the small locator attachments that snap the denture into place. Maintaining excellent gum health and treating your new smile with care are the best ways to ensure your implant-retained dentures last for many years to come.
